Another well-known author, John Vaughan, gives an overview of half a century of freight working on British Railways covering the period from 1948 to 1997 in his book The Rise and Fall of British Railways: Goods & Freight.

The text, along with more than 360 photographs, records the transition from traditional steam age goods via the 1954 Modernisation Plan and 1963 Beeching report on ‘The Reshaping of British Railways’, to the modern age of  diesel and electric traction and high capacity block trains.

It might not appeal to everyone, but there is plenty to digest for the modeller.
