The last steam locomotive built at Doncaster - BR Standard 4MT Class 2-6-0 76114
06 January 2012
Following the success of the first Limited Edition Peterborough locomotive, British Railway Modelling magazine again approached Bachmann to produce the Doncaster locomotive - BR Standard 4MT Class 2-6-0 No.76114.
BR Standard 4MT Class 2-6-0 No.76114 was the last of a 115 strong class designed at Doncaster under the direction of Robert Riddles, the last Chief Mechanical Engineer responsible for the design and construction of steam locomotives for BR.Nos.76000-19 and 76075-99 were built at Horwich, with Nos.76020-19 and 76100-114 built at Doncaster.
No.76114 left the ‘Plant’ on October 16, 1957, initially going to Glasgow St Rollox (65B) and later Beattock (68D). Sadly it did not survive into preservation, being withdrawn at the end of December 1966, and was broken up at Shipbuilding Industries, Faslane.
Four of the class survive in preservation – 76017, 76077, 76079 and 76084 - although none are believed to be currently operational.
This highly collectable Limited Edition model represents an historic locomotive in as-built condition in October 1957. Paired with a BR2A tender it was outshopped in lined black mixed traffic livery, but lacking the yellow and red paint to the roller bearing axleboxes on the tender. Upon commissioning the model (based on photographs from Color Rail) British Railway Modelling were sent a painted sample – key details being the correct locomotive number, the omission of a shed plate on the smokebox door, and the lack of painted lining on the cylinders.
With the sample model completed, BRM approved the production model – the finished article is Limited Edition, only 512 were made! A rare opportunity to own a piece of railway history
