Steam Locomotive Tornado on the West Coast Main Line
14 September 2011
Tornado, the first new main line steam locomotive to be built in Britain for almost 50 years, will be taking the West Coast Main Line by storm on Wednesday 21st September 2011. She will be hauling the ‘The Caledonian Tornado’ charter train from Crewe to Glasgow and return, a challenging 510 miles including two of the most arduous railway gradients in the British Isles; Shap Fell in Cumbria and the notorious ten mile climb of Beattock Bank in the Southern Uplands.
This train, thought to be the most miles in a single day by a steam locomotive since the end of scheduled steam hauled trains in 1968, is also a number of firsts for the now world-famous Tornado. It will be the first opportunity for the people of Manchester to travel on a main line train hauled by Tornado directly from their city (the locomotive’s previous visit was with The Royal Train carrying TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2009) and also Tornado’s first ever visit to Scotland’s second city of Glasgow.
Tornado on her test run
Hayden Fortune of HF Railtours, the train’s promoter, commented:
“The love of railway engines is in my blood and has led me to become involved in running rail tours. I believe ‘The Caledonian Tornado’ will be a record breaking journey for the locomotive and a fantastic experience for all those travelling with her.”
Tornado, in her new livery of BR Brunswick green, and hauling vintage carriages, will depart from Crewe station early in the morning (estimated departure time 07:00, return 00:15). ‘The Caledonian Tornado’ will pick up passengers from Stockport (depart 07:30, return 23:45), Manchester Piccadilly (depart 07:45, return 23:30), Bolton (depart 08:15, return 22.55), Leyland (depart 08:25, return 22:45), Preston (depart 09:10, return 22:15) and finally Lancaster (depart 09:35, return 21:55) before heading north to Glasgow, where there will be a break of around three hours.
On board those in the dining cars will be treated to traditional dishes from the Best of British menu made with only the finest local ingredients and skilfully prepared by the chef who has forty years of Pullman catering behind him, as well as cooking on The Royal Train for HM The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. There will also be First Class Plus and Standard accommodation available.
